Remedial Saddle Fitting and Equine Rehabilitation

April 14, 2018

Every horse needs a correctly fitted saddle but rehab cases need particular attention.

Fitting saddles to horses who are going through rehabilitation or 'remedial saddle fitting' requires significant skill and experience to ensure the horse can develop properly and have the best chance possible of enjoying his ridden career. It is also important that they are fitted with a saddle which is as horse friendly as possible.

Features to look for in a saddle are:

-  large weight bearing surface

- correct tree type for your specific horse

- a drop panel (sufficient panel support behind the shoulder)

- generous wither and spine clearance

- adequate gullet channel width

WHAT IS REMEDIAL SADDLE FITTING?

The Definition of Remedial Saddle Fitting
"Fitting a saddle to a horse which not only takes into account his current shape but also allows for future development while allowing and encouraging un-used or under-used muscles to re-activate and re-engage".
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY HORSE NEEDS A REMEDIAL FIT?

It is recommended that your horse is seen by an experienced remedial saddle fitter after any illness, injury, lameness, back problem or significant time-off (more than 6 months). It is also vital that your horse is seen by a remedial saddle fitter after any physical or psychological damage caused by a previous ill fitting saddle or after diagnosis and treatment of kissing spines.
Damage caused by previous saddles may not be picked up by other professionals but there are some telltale signs you as an owner can look for. The most common are: white hairs, dip in front of the withers, indentations and dips behind the shoulders.

If your horse has any of the these symptoms please contact an experienced remedial saddle fitter.
